New approaches to the statistical analysis of satellite and remote- sensing data

The most widely known remote-sensing data are satellite images (typically LANDSAT or other visible imagery), which are used in the geosciences for a multitude of applications, including landuse, urbanization, sea-ice expansion, to name only a few. Commonly, these remote-sensing data are analyzed with the help of commercial software systems (eg. ENVI, ERDAS-IMAGINE). Analysis methods employ the multi-channel properties of satellite image data and build on multivariate statistics approaches and GIS-type operations (Zamperoni 1989, Jaehne 1989). The objective of this paper is to introduce to (1.) remote-sensing data that are not satellite data, (2.) their geomathematical analysis and (3.) consequences for the analysis of satellite geophysical data and satellite image data. Necessarily, a short paper cannot attempt to be exhaustive or give a complete review.
